During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The new political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting suggestions to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
