Man City Three Goals to Nil Manchester United: Lauren Hemp scores in Manchester City dominant win.
Similar to Storm Claudia swept through the northwest the prior day, City blew the visitors aside at the their home ground. It was a statement 3-0 triumph for the City coach's side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their leadership claims as they strengthened their standing at the top of the table.
Consecutive Setbacks for Manchester United
This outcome represented successive league defeats for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, placing them seven points off the table toppers with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.
Manchester United's capacity to manage domestic and European football with a small squad has been a frequently analyzed issue since they qualified for the Champions League. Considering the calendar, it always seemed this was the week that would fully examine this ability. Sadly for the visitors, they looked fatigued all game, the memorable win against the French side clearly having had an impact.
Team Changes
The United manager had sought to make changes with a several alterations. Ella Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all added energy, although the omission of the in-form Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.
City, in contrast, have no such workload issues. Jeglertz made a single alteration from the previous win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her first start since recovering from a physical setback.
Commanding Opening Period
The pressure started to gather for the United boss and his squad from the first whistle. This was a show of the strength from Manchester City whose energetic offense manipulated and tore United open with a sublime opening period performance that saw them score three goals in under half an hour.
This placed City in a commanding position and left United disorganized. Prior to this encounter, United had conceded just few in this league campaign but they disintegrated in the face of Manchester City's creative prowess.
Early Chances
The omens came quickly when Miedema used her power to push Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot off target. Hemp was at the core of everything in the beginning, exploiting the room left by Jayde Riviere down United’s right side. Her deliveries were posing a threat and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg cleared off the line.
The Red Devils had several forays forwards, their direct style giving them options in the flanks but they could not trouble the City goalkeeper. Manchester City, meanwhile, dominated the ball, probing their opponents and trying to lure them of their defensive shape.
Triple Strike
They converted their dominance with almost the first period played when Fujino won the hosts a corner. A ball to the back post was directed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was City’s seventh header of the term.
They increased their advantage with two more goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was allowed to advance through the middle from defense, the field opened up for City. The key Kerstin Casparij received possession on the wing before delivering a pinpoint low cross for Bunny Shaw to force home. A short time later, they had a third after a rapid turnover in the ball saw Lauren Hemp afforded the opportunity to strike a shot home from distance.
Second Half
The clearest adjustment came from Skinner at the break as Melvine Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to alter the outcome of the match. Former Manchester City player Park came nearest, hitting the woodwork, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and did not manage to record a solitary shot on goal.
The hosts, meanwhile, could have added to their advantage when a delightful Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the hosts. After failing to beat any side who ended above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have victories against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a commanding position after the opening fixtures.
